Living on a Prayer & 2 Hours Sleep

It’s 5.05am. I’ve just got baby back to sleep after his milk fix. I’m knackered after boobing roughly every hour all night, but thank you Jesus hubby will be up at 6 am to take over so I can sleep! Hubby starts work at 08:30 today, so I’ll get around two hours. Girl, I am counting down to my date with sleep and I am so grateful. Because we’re in lockdown Dominic is working at his home office a.k.a a desk set up in a small corner of baby’s nursery in the bedroom next door! It takes hubby 7 seconds to get to the office!Bonus!

I was Wrong About Ms Rona

Speaking of lockdown, how’re you coping with lockdown 2? I just wanted to say I was wrong. So very wrong. When Covid reared her ugly head several months ago, I was sure she’d disappear as quickly as she rolled up on us. When Boris announced the first lockdown in March, Dominic and I assumed that by the time our little ones due date came in September, Ms ‘Rona would’ve been defeated. But it seems as though she’s here to stay.

Pregnant in a Pandemic

Women pregnant during covid pandemic have missed out on much of the community we’d have under normal circumstances. No baby clubs, no maternity classes, or even basic things like seeing your midwife or having hubby at appointments and scans 🙁 I was assigned a midwife when I was 38 weeks pregnant!!!! I spent 7 months of my pregnancy ‘at home’. Either in lockdown or self-isolation as pregnant women were initially on the ‘vulnerable list’.

This pregnant gal just wanted to visit and cuddle her mum. I wanted to celebrate my pregnancy and have a sweet gender reveal ( I did end up having an online one). I wanted to go shopping for baby grows and try out a pushchair in person, but none of that was possible. We need community. We need each other.

Boris eventually gave the impression that things ‘seemed’ to be ‘improving’, promoted eat out to help out and sent everyone back to the pub, school and work. I personally couldn’t see any positive changes in the pandemic, and still being on ‘the vulnerable list’, stayed mainly at home.

After delivering my bundle of joy, I started looking forward to maybe getting out again (selectively & socially distanced of course) especially after so much time with limited access to friends, family, community and services.

Lockdown Take Two

Then Boris said ‘it’s time for LOCKDOWN TWO’……….. I was thinking “LOCKDOWN AGAIN”, I didn’t even make it out of the first one!

But here we are……..

During Lockdown 1 over at The Hope Table, we provided a list of homely activities to try…..but how many tomato plants can one grow…….how many Pinterest projects can one take on? I want to be out and about connecting with other mums, sitting in a cafe somewhere, exchanging ‘oooh’s’ and ‘ahhh’s’ over one another’s baby, talking boobie milk, reusable nappies and ‘how-to-get-the-baby-to-sleep’ techniques. But hey, Rona said ‘no’.

But all hope is not lost. It never is.

All hope is not lost, and I for one plan to make the best of every situation…..including being in lockdown…..again. Even if it means whipping out the old Etsy crocheting project. (even though I’m not very good at it).

My Lockdown Smile List

Here’s my lockdown smile list. I call it a smile list because these are small things that make me smile.

1. DAILY EXERCISE

We try and take a nice walk near home so all three of us can get some fresh air. We don’t make it out every day, but we try as much as possible. (Newborns need around 10 million things prepared and packed to take with them wherever they go. (Sometimes we don’t even make in the shower, let alone out of the house). When we do get out it’s therapeutic and does wonders. (You can leave home for exercise under the rules).

If you can’t get out, try a fun online workout and get those endorphins going. 

2. JOIN THE INSTAGRAM FAM

Use social media to connect with other parents and mum’s-to-be. We are all in this together. I find plenty of quality mummy groups on Facebook covering all sorts of topics too.

I know social media can be like a love hate relationship for some people but take the time to fine-tune your social media feed to meet your needs and interests and it can be an absolute blessing and a wonderful place for making beautiful connections with people around the globe.

There is a massive #motherhood community on Instagram, of which I LOVE being a part of. It’s been a lifeline through the pandemic. I’ve had the opportunity to make unique connections with other women that I can journey with. We talk about breastfeeding, labour, life, business, world affairs, cloth nappies, and all sorts!

3. TALK TO OTHERS OUTSIDE Of MY HOUSEHOLD FACE-TO-FACE

Zoom? Boring? From work calls, prayer meetings and weekly family fun sessions and an online gender reveal, we went zooming crazy in lockdown 1.

But there are other options for video calls if you are bored of the whole zoom set up. Two of my faves currently are WhatsApp video calls, which is nothing new but allows me to call groups. Then there’s instagram video too. You can even have your dog-ear filters on if you fancy it! The main point is to find ways to communicate with others outside of home.

4. PASSION & JOY

I want to rekindle the flame for some of my passions like reading, being artistic, Bible journaling and writing starting with this blog. It’s not easy to find the time to do things you like when you’re looking after a newborn 24/7 but it’s good to squeeze in something that you can do just for you.

5. ENTREPRENEURSHIP & MINISTRY

With all that’s going on, pregnancy, the pandemic, moving house etc. The Hope Table has taken a bit of a back seat, but we are working on ideas for a relaunch. Serving the ladies that are a part of THT makes my heart warm so that defo makes the lockdown top agenda 🙂

Dear Mama, You’ve got this.

I know you might be struggling with the idea of another lockdown. This can be a tough situation for many. And having been there, my heart especially goes out to all the pregnant mamas feeling abandoned and anxious in this time. I can’t say when this season will be over, well none of us can. But I can say, ‘you’ve got this’. We have got this. We got through it once before. We’ll get through it again.

    I was pregnant during the pandemic too and giving birth during it was such a different experience compared to my first child. I’m just ready for this to all be over.

    I love your suggestions. I am waiting for PA to go into lockdown again too. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened yet since our daily numbers are higher than anything before. But I love your tips and positive attitude toward the situation. 🙂

    I love your attitude! Lockdowns are not fun but I also used it to further pour my energy into my passions and dreams. Making the most of any negative situation is the best way to go. You’ve got this!
